Glenn Maxwell turned on the style under the Oakland lights, producing a blistering century to propel Washington Freedom to a commanding 113-run victory over the Los Angeles Knight Riders in the Major League Cricket clash on June 17, 2025.
Batting first, Washington posted an imposing 208 for five in their 20 overs, thanks largely to Maxwell’s breathtaking knock. Walking in with his side in need of momentum, the skipper took charge and delivered a masterclass in power-hitting. He remained unbeaten on 106 off just 49 balls an innings decorated with 2 fours and a staggering 13 sixes scoring at a strike rate of 216.32.
Earlier, Mitchell Owen gave the innings a turbo-charged start, smashing 32 off only 11 balls. Obus Pienaar chipped in with some handy late runs, but it was Maxwell’s onslaught that left the Knight Riders’ bowlers shell-shocked. Despite tidy efforts from Corné Dry and Tanveer Sangha who both claimed two wickets Los Angeles had no answer to the sustained assault.
“I Gave Myself a Chance” – MAXWELL
Reflecting on his innings, Maxwell said:
I gave myself a chance. Being captain, there’s that added responsibility to anchor the innings. I told myself to invest in those first 20 balls and once I got through that phase, the rest flowed. It really paid off today.
Chasing 209, the Knight Riders never found their rhythm. Saif Badar’s 32 was the only meaningful resistance as they crumbled for just 95 in 16.3 overs. Washington’s bowling unit maintained relentless pressure, with Jack Edward and Mitchell Owen leading the charge and picking up key wickets.
In the end, it was a night that belonged unequivocally to Glenn Maxwell. His leadership and explosive batting set the tone for Washington Freedom’s dominant display a performance that will be remembered in this MLC season.
