With doubts lingering over Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, England captain Ben Stokes has made it clear that he is only concerned with his own team’s affairs. The Indian pacer’s availability remains uncertain, but Stokes insists it’s a matter for India to handle.
Bumrah was initially scheduled to feature in just three of the five Tests in the series. After a stellar performance in the opener at Headingley, where he took five wickets in the first innings, questions remain over whether he will be part of the playing XI for the second Test in Birmingham.
Asked about Bumrah’s potential absence, Stokes was candid. “That’s for India to figure out,” he said in the pre-match press conference. “I’m the captain of England, and I’m focused on preparing my team. India are a strong side; they always play with great intensity and passion.”
Stokes also acknowledged the immense expectations placed on Indian cricketers, noting the heightened pressure they face. “There’s always pressure in international sport, but when you play for India, it comes with even more. It’s a very proud cricketing nation.”
After India’s defeat in the first Test, head coach Gautam Gambhir reiterated that Bumrah’s workload would be managed as planned, limiting him to just two of the remaining four matches. However, on the eve of the second Test, Indian captain Shubman Gill stated that Bumrah is fit and available, with a final decision to be taken closer to the match.
India will be eager to bounce back and draw level in the series when the second Test gets underway in Birmingham.
