If Pakistan withdraw from the Champions Trophy 2025, it will incur huge financial losses, attract lawsuits, and even lead to an international boycott.
The chorus in the Pakistan cricket fraternity to boycott the Champions Trophy is on the rise after the deadlock in reaching a consensus regarding the tournament’s hosts, but it may not be a road that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) would want to embark on. If it decides to withdraw from the ICC Champions Trophy, the PCB reportedly could face a massive financial loss, lawsuits, and even international alienation.
Pakistan, the original hosts of the Champions Trophy set to take place in January-March, is yet to give a green signal to the Hybrid Model, which now seems like the only solution after India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan due to security reasons.
A senior cricket administrator here, who is well-versed with the organisation of ICC events, revealed the nitty-gritty of PCB’s agreement with the ICC.
“Pakistan has not only signed a host agreement with the ICC but like all other participating nations in the event, it has also signed a mandatory Members’ Participation Agreement (MPA) with the ICC,” the administrator told PTI.
“It is only after a member nation signs the MPA for playing in an ICC event that it is eligible to get a share of revenues earned from ICC events.
